Malik ibn Dinar dit: « Il est appelé dinar car il est (un mot composé constitué des mots) dîn (religion) et nâr (feu de l'enfer). »
Il a dit par ailleurs: « Sa signification est que si vous le prenez
(l'argent) légitimement, il (fait partie de la) religion et si vous le
prenez sans droit, il est alors (pour vous mener vers) le feu de
l'enfer. »
