It is reported that the prophet (sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam) said:
A promise made by the believer orally is as strong (and binding on him) as a promise that he makes by striking his hand (on the hand of other person – this was a gesture of absolute agreement or finalization of a treaty or promise back then).
[Ref: Shaykh Yaseen al-Fadani narrated this in al-`Ujalah fil-Ahaadeeth al-Musalsalah on page 71; also reported by Shah Muhaddith Dhelvi in his Arba`een via his sanad back to Abu Taahir – Zayn al-`Abideen - `Hussain - `Ali. Daylami also brought this in Musnad Firdous as said in Kanz ul-`Ummal (3/617); See Jaami` as-sagheer page 59 or this: http://www.ghrib.net/vb/showthread.php… for details]
